Donald L. Sherak, MD

Brookline, MA

I maintain an active part-time clinical and consulting practice in Brookline, MA and also see a small number of patients in the Northampton, MA area. I work with pre-adolescents, adolescents and adults facing anxiety and stress disorders including PTSD, and also those who have clinical issues related to problems of impulse control. While my work is predominantly a combination of psychotherapy and prudent psychopharmacology, I also teach my patients Breath-Body-Mind practices when appropriate to their condition and circumstance. I provide consultation and conjoint psychopharmacologic and somatic treatment for a group of patients who are in active therapy with my colleagues as well.

I am also interested in enhancing health care provider resilience and countering potential burn out in practitioners. I am developing a brief model program of Breath-Body-Mind exercises that can be conveniently used by therapists, physicians in practice, as well as by those who are still in training. The program is designed to facilitate resilience and to decrease of the impact of the stressors that often accompany the practice of psychotherapy and psychiatry, and all of medicine -- as well as the stressors encountered by trainees in their respective programs.

I am board-certified in Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. I have also been a student and student-teacher of tai chi chuan and chi gong for over two decades.

Describe How You Plan to Integrate BBM in Your Work:

I will continue to expand the use of BBM skills in my direct work with patients in various clinical settings (while continuing my own practice). I am also involved in teaching and providing supervision for Child Psychiatry Fellows and Social Work students and plan to introduce the principles and some introductory practices of BBM in my scheduled lectures over the coming year.
