I am a sixth-grade teacher at an inner city public school. Many of my students experience trauma in their lives, some daily. Most do not know how to release this trauma induced stress which then results in behavioral issues in the classroom and prevents all students from experiencing a safe learning environment. I explicitly teach students the Breath-Body-Mind techniques which we use daily in class. Students are reluctant at first, but soon join little by little. Impacts of having BBM tools at their disposal have been positive. The amount of inappropriate behavior exhibited by students has been reduced. Students feel empowered to control their inner turmoil, those feelings that had controlled them in the past. Students share these techniques with family members as well. My stress levels are significantly reduced and I get to move, breath and meditate in the middle of our hectic day as well! I am also a certified trainer of “Infinite Possibilities”, a program which helps individuals see their great potential through visualizations, positive affirmations and meditation. We use this in the classroom to boost individual and group self-esteem as well as to formulate imaginative goals and create plans to achieve these.
