Alisha Marie Owen Tenbus, PT, DPT

Gilett, Pennsylvania

I am a physical therapist who has focused my career on working with children from the ages of birth through 21 years of age with a variety of gross motor needs and diagnoses. I am employed full time by Horseheads Central School District as a physical therapist assisting children aged 5 to 21 years. My work in the academic setting focuses on improving students’ ability to access their academic environment, including their ability to control themselves and focus. I began training as a Breath-Body-Mind instructor as a member of a team through Horseheads School District to support the staff and students of Horseheads District. I currently work for Children's Therapy Network to provide physical therapy for early intervention for children from birth through the age of 3. I am an independent physical therapy provider for preschool children, ages 3 to 5, through Chemung County New York. I coach Special Olympic athletes starting at the age of 8 years and up based out of Horseheads and Elmira, New York.
I have observed the ability of breath control to assist children with spasticity to decrease the spasticity in their muscles and improve their ability to move their extremities in different directions. I have observed how decreasing the breathing rate can improve the self-control of students with ADHD and improve their ability to focus on academics. I have observed how certain breathing practices can reduce the anxiety of people, especially Special Olympic athletes prior to a competition. I have observed how tapping can awaken and improve the focus of students and athletes. Prior to this training, I have participated in Mindfulness trainings provided by Ithaca College and was taught how breathing impacts the body through my physical therapist education at Daemen College where I obtained my BS in PT and Utica College where I obtained my DPT. I have seen the benefits of the Breath-Body-Mind teachings personally and have improved my ability to sleep at night, something that has always been a struggle in my life.
