SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19): Complementary and Integrative Therapies Update

Dr. Richard P. Brown and Dr. Patricia Gerbarg will discuss the latest herbal, off-label and promising therapies for SARS-CoV-2 prevention and recovery. Evidence, mechanisms of action, risks, benefits, and dosing for CAIM approaches will be presented. The following treatments are included: Red Mangrove, French Oak Wood extract, Rhodiola rosea, beta-glucan, Black Elderberry, Cystanche, and famotidine. A new CAIM treatment algorithm will be proposed, based on target symptoms.

About the Speakers

Richard P. Brown, MD, Associate Clinical Professor in Psychiatry, Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in NY, where he taught advanced psychopharmacology for many years. Dr. Brown completed psychiatry residency and fellowship in psychobiology and psychopharmacology New York Hospital Cornell. Over the past 40 years, Dr. Brown has been on the cutting edge of CAIM, developing novel treatments for the many complex, treatment resistant patients in his consultation practice. He gives over 100 lectures per year and co-authored over 100 scientific articles, chapters, and award-winning books.

Patricia L. Gerbarg, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor in Psychiatry, New York Medical College, graduated from Harvard Medical School and the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute. She serves on the Board of The American Botanical Council and as co-chair of the Task Force on Complementary and Integrative Medicine of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Gerbarg co-authored numerous scientific articles, books, and book chapters on CAIM and is first editor of Complementary and Integrative Treatments in Psychiatric Practice (American Psychiatric Association Publishing, 2017).

Helen Lavretsky, MD, MS, is a professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the Jane and Terry Semel Institute at UCLA. She directs the Late-life Mood, Stress and Wellness Research Program and the Integrative Psychiatry Clinic. She is a geriatric and integrative psychiatrist with a federally funded research program in novel treatments for resilience in geriatric depression and mild cognitive impairment, using mind-body medicine. Her research includes investigations of psychopharmacological treatment of geriatric depression and mild cognitive impairment, and the use of Tai Chi and yoga for treatment and prevention of late-life mood and cognitive disorders. She is the author of Resilience and Aging: Research and Practice

Sarah Nguyen, MD, is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA, and her research focuses on pharmacological and combination strategies using complementary and behavioral interventions for mood and cognitive disorders in adults of all ages. She has received a Clinical Attending Teaching Award for her work with residents and a Kindness Award for her work with veterans. She is the Associate Director of the UCLA Integrative Psychiatry Clinic.
